We believe that effective bicycle parking can only be successfully implemented if in addition to the design of the single parking fixture also the layout and specification of the entire multi-space facility is considered already in the conceptual planning stage.
The specification of each multi-module facility shall provide the following:
- Convenient locations
- Basic protection from the elements
- Efficient usage of available space
- Integrate easily with existing car parking facilities (indoor and outdoor)
- Safe and easy access to the bicycle parking modules
- Separation from adjacent motor vehicle traffic
- Safe and uncomplicated arrival to and departure from the bicycle parking facility
- Lighting needs to be provided for night time and other low light situations
- Optional surveillance methods
In order to ensure the successful implementation of effective bicycle parking on a large scale we need to develop and implement a comprehensive and effective deployment strategy covering areas of activities ranging from dispersion of information to initial funding to long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.
The business infrastructure of the bicycle parking system shall enable the following:
- Availability of effective bicycle parking at all desirable bicycling destinations
- Adequate number of modules to meet – or better exceed – peak demand
- Creative funding options to allow installations under various budget constraints and considerations at:
- public locations
- public transit hubs
- corporate and institutional commuter parking
- Information programs to educate the public as well as officials about the benefits of effective bicycle parking
- Inform bicyclists about bicycle parking locations, routing to and from, nearby attractions, local bicycling regulations, special events
- Organize educational events at parking locations: bicycle riding techniques, traffic safety, bicycle maintenance clinics, traffic regulations
- Organize social rides and events at parking locations
- Secure support from local law enforcement for increased security
